      The authors explore Old Cambridge's architecture and development in the context of its social and economic history; the development of Harvard Square as a commercial center and regional mass transit hub; the creation of parks and open spaces designed by Charles Eliot and the Olmsted Brothers; and the formation of a thriving nineteenth-century. It is a tribute to the real Charles Eliot, the pioneering landscape architect and open space visionary who was born in and went on to found the then-named “Trustees of Public Reservations,” now known as The Trustees, in as the first land preservation nonprofit of its kind in the world which preserves and operates some of the state.
